Kalumburu Strong Women
Kalumburu is a remote Aboriginal community in the far north of the Kimberley in Western Australia. This is Kwini Country. It is a small community but there are some strong women there, building some important enterprises.
WARNING: This video contains images of people who have passed away.
The Tramulla Strong Women’s Group work to create culturally relevant activities and microenterprises to connect people to their country and culture. One of their most successful projects has been the Tramulla Op Shop. The vision of its founder, Doreen Unghungo, was to create opportunities for healing for women and children in Kalumburu. Doreen has passed away now but her Op Shop remains one of the most joyous social hubs of the community, providing skill development, economic independence and funds for cultural activities.
This enterprise is supported by Enterprise Partnerships WA. EPWA’s founder, Clare Wood, is passionate about finding creative community-led solutions to mental health concerns.
EPWA also supports the creative spirit of the local women through the Kalumburu Photography Collective, which is fostering some promising talent and pathways to self-employment.
I’m so excited to introduce you to Kimberley French, one of the many talented photographers. In this video she’s hanging out on the beach with Clare, talking about all the things that inspire her.
