Words of Kindness
This year I collaborated with Refugee Voices to create a campaign to support people who are locked up in Australia’s detention system. We used online voice messaging to connect refugees with their supporters in the community and give them hope.
Words of Kindness invited the public to record voice messages of support and kindness for people who have been isolated from their families and the world for prolonged periods of time. The messages were delivered throughout Australia’s Refugee week and shared on social media platforms.
The voice messaging technology we used was provided by a company called Telbee. The Directors, Nicholas Phair and Bernie Klein, worked with me to customise the service for this project. It was an application they hadn’t previously used it for but were keen to test the technology for this cause.
I am forever grateful for the creative spirit of the people I work with—it is essential to innovate if we are to continue to connect with each other during these Covid years.
Refugee Voices was a refugee-led community organisation based in Melbourne. It was founded by Ahmad Hakim, a three time refugee, originally from Iran. Ahmad is committed to amplifying the voices of people who have lived experience of seeking asylum so they can shape the policies that effect them.
