Magpie Goose

I edit the artist videos for Magpie Goose. These stories feature the artists, sharing the culture and history and heart behind their designs.

Wanda Gibson is a Nukgal Wurra woman of the Guugu Yimithirr people (on her mum’s side). She lives in HopeVale on the Cape York Peninsula, QLD. In this video, Wanda talks about her childhood memories of family washing at the creek, beach camps and mission days.

I spend hours with the artists, listening to them talk about their lives, where they live, their history and their artwork—all on my computer screen, a world away from where they are. I go over and over their conversations, editing them for sharing on social media.

My job is to stay true to the spirit of what each person is saying, to represent their words accurately and generously. It’s an intense process but I always come out the other side feeling like I know them—like we have a special connection.

And then there is the magic that happens when I step into the real world and see someone wearing Magpie Goose clothing. I automatically feel connected with the design because I can hear the artist telling me about what was in their heart when they created it. It’s like I’ve been let in on a secret about a stranger’s clothes.

The stories behind the designs come with the clothing so you can read them—but there’s nothing like hearing it from the artist. I recommend you make the connection.

You can find the collection of artist videos on Magpie Goose instagram account.
